This website is an example of a wiki. In one of my classes at GSU, Social Studies Concepts and Issues, all of the students set up wikis and the instructor had weekly discussion questions that we all discussed individually. It was a fantastic idea. We were assigned weekly readings, and the professor posted questions that made us think about the assigned reading topics. Then, we responded on our own wiki pages that was setup for the class, and it was not open to the public—just our class members. Our classmates responded to our posting, and this helped us colloborate with our peers. It was fun to be able to ask a question and have many responses to our questions. The professor even added her comments which contributed to the discussion as well. Some students, who never spoke in class, were some of the biggest contributors to the wiki discussions.
We even made our own wiki for an individual history assignment using DBQ’s (Document Based Questions). I think a social studies or a language arts class could benefit from this sort of assignment. I will definitely use wikis in my classroom for classroom discussion.
